Go, lovely rose...
Tell her that's young,
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died.
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died.
Small is the worth
Of beauty from the light retired:
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herself to be desired,
And not blush so to be admired.
Of beauty from the light retired:
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herself to be desired,
And not blush so to be admired.
Extracts from "Go, lovely rose" by Edmund Waller (1606 - 1687)
Between rain showers, I had just two minutes to capture today's tangle of tropical flowers that bloom outside my studio. If only models for my paintings and sculptures were as readily available, at all times and in all weathers.
As with Edmund Waller's mistress, Small is the worth of beauty from the light retired.
